Current-Power Relationship
Above threshold: P = η_d × (I - I_th)
Threshold current: I_th = I_tr × A + I_leak
Temperature dependence: I_th(T) = I_th(T₀) × exp((T-T₀)/T₀)
Drive ratio: I_op / I_th (typically 2-6×)
Efficiency Definitions
- Slope Efficiency: dP/dI above threshold
- Wall-Plug: P_optical / P_electrical
- Differential: η_d = η_i × η_c × (hν/e)
- Internal: η_i (recombination efficiency)
- Collection: η_c (light extraction)
Operating Guidelines
- Threshold margin: 20-50% above I_th
- Maximum current: < 80% of damage limit
- Temperature limit: Junction < 70°C
- Current density: < 5 kA/cm² typical
- Lifetime: Lower current = longer life
- Efficiency: Peak at 2-3× threshold
Laser Types & Currents
- Edge-emitting: 20-200 mA threshold
- VCSEL: 1-10 mA threshold
- High Power: 1-50 A continuous
- Pulsed: Up to 100× CW current
- QCL: 100-2000 mA typical
- Fiber coupled: Optimized for efficiency
⚠️ Current Safety Guidelines
Operating Limits: Never exceed maximum current ratings even briefly. High currents can cause catastrophic optical damage (COD) at facets. Use current limiting and soft-start circuits. Monitor junction temperature and implement thermal shutdown. ESD protection is critical during handling and testing. Always check manufacturer specifications for safe operating areas.
